Fun on Path of Exile

I've been doing tests with the cast on critical strike support gem lately and I have been having quite a bit of fun.

I've looked into most abilities, but so far I've been using discharge. I also use cold snap + concentrated effect for a single target ability in this video, which puts out slightly more dps for a loss of survivability (no life leech, I don't own any 5L or 6L armor pieces).
I can maintain 87% resists (can easily be 88% with one more point in my tree) and 15,000 armor almost always during dangerous combat. This gives me quite a bit of survivability. Unfortunately I can only use this for general farming. Big bosses just don't melt fast enough with a 4L Voll's Protector, and even elemental resistant rare mobs give me trouble unless they're in the center of a group.
I will be doing tests with other abilities (such as using spectral throw in place of cyclone, and using firestorm in place of discharge). There seems to be a lot of potential in this.

I'm also working on a tree based from the Scion that uses blood magic in place of eldritch battery, and also does not get iron reflexes. While running grace + iron reflexes is nice, it seems unnecessary. Trying to run cyclone off of mana is very difficult, and I can often run out of mana. This is especially true when I use Voll's Protector because of its huge mana reduction. Not having to take mana nodes would be very helpful. With the blood magic setup, I also get some useful Marauder nodes (+2% Max Resists and -30% Critical Strike Damage Taken). Getting frozen can kill you .
