What is this folder?

Unread post by DieKralle »

So I have a folder called "System Volume Information" and it has over 110GB data in it with 127 Files. So my question is what is this folder and what happens if I delete it?

Also a picture to show you the folder :D If the picture is to small then I'm sorry

Turn off System Restore if you don't ever use it.

Good news: You cannot delete it. Or even look inside it. This is to protect people from themselves. You don't want to delete system critical files by accident.

If you Google system+volume+information+10..1000+gb you will find more information and answers.

p.s.: For the love of Flying Spagetti Monster (may He welcome you into the loving embrace of His Holy Noodly Appendage) learn to crop:

The text in this screenshot is barely legible.

This is how you take clear screenshots:

Also, when I play my game CSS (Counter Strike Source) it drops frames A LOT. After 10-20 min of playing the game it starts to drop frames from 60-1 Frame. After that it crashes because it reached 0 FPS. It jumped to WoW and it drops there frames too but not that much so it doesn't crash. My computer is fast enough before you say it is slow.

Mystery errors are not fixed by simply freeing up space.

Uninstall applications, especially ones that run in the background. Not just those little icons in the bottom right corner of your screen, but truly invisible background processes and non-Microsoft services. Hell, I even decimated my Microsoft services. There are roughly 260 services on any machine. Of those I bet 200 are not needed by everyone. Find them and disable them.

Watch your performance using process explorer and other tools. As soon as you start experiencing frame drops, quickly look at what's being logged in process monitor right now. Identify the culprit and remove it from your system or if you really must keep it, then repair it (update if outdated, reinstall otherwise).

Clean out your computer from dust. (Not de_dust, but actual dirt, dust, hairs, cobwebs, etc.)

Watch temperatures. Maybe you lose FPS because your video card overheats and switches to safe mode until cooler temperatures are reached. Or your CPU downclocks itself to prevent an explosion/burnout that's possible after 100°C+ is reached (or over 200°F.).

I notice heat coming from my CPU Fan. I'll clean the Fan tomorrow for safety meatures :)

I stop playing WoW and CSS for my own safety so that I don't burn alive :D

Also when you Edit your post it doesn't show that I edited it.

Yep. This is an administrator-only perk. It's more annoying than useful, really.

Edit: I can force the edit message to appear.

Im btw. the User/Administrator of this PC ;) I can open anything I want and delete anything I want :) Well except the very important Windows Files for starting this PC.

I'm gonna clean the fan with a new un-used small paint brush.

Hah, I use a vacuum cleaner on maximum setting. Sucks out all the dust from every compartment. (And some of the vital components from the motherboard if you aren't careful!)

Edit: Be advised that System Volume Information is one of those "very important Windows Files for starting this PC" as you described it.

Thats why I use a paint brush. I can control my movements and can't suck out vital components from the motherboard :D I'm gonna be still careful :)
