No. Not even remotely similar. Spore is built upon the Milky Way itself, not some Messier object.
Messiers are starting to resemble interstate route shields. They go from 1 to 110 without variation, so we'll have to stop using them.

Yes it is strange. Looks like a lot of gas, orbiting slowly around a star. (Not that I know anything about astronomy.)
